What Does a Web Analytics Consultant Do? Skills, Deliverables and Certification Options

A web analytics consultant helps an organisation turn website data into decisions. The work can include defining useful measures, checking data collection, analysing visitor journeys and recommending changes that can be evaluated. It is a role, rather than the name of one universal certification.
When choosing a consultant or planning this career, look at the questions they can answer and the work they can demonstrate. Japan’s WACA qualification is one education option; it should not be confused with the general occupation.
What a web analytics consultant does and when a team needs one
A team may need help when reports disagree, traffic grows without a clear business outcome, or nobody knows whether a registration event represents a successful registration. The consultant first establishes the decision the team wants to make. That determines which data is useful and which limitations matter.
The scope should be agreed explicitly. An engagement might cover a measurement audit, an analysis of landing pages, or an ongoing review of experiments. It does not automatically include implementing every tag, redesigning the site or managing advertising. A clear scope prevents a dashboard project from being mistaken for a complete growth programme.
Typical deliverables: measurement plan, data audit and decision memo
Useful deliverables make the reasoning reproducible. Someone else should be able to understand the definitions, repeat the comparison and see why a recommendation follows from the evidence.
Deliverable | What it contains | Question it answers |
|---|---|---|
Measurement plan | Objectives, events, success conditions, parameters and owners | What exactly are we measuring? |
Data audit | Missing or duplicate events, destinations, production hosts, consent and domain transitions | Can we use these numbers for this decision? |
Analysis | Defined periods, segments, denominators and supporting observations | Where is the journey breaking down? |
Decision memo | Recommendation, evidence, uncertainty and a validation plan | What should we do next, and how will we check it? |
A report that lists traffic without explaining its relationship to the objective is incomplete. Equally, an honest audit may conclude that an outcome is not yet measured. That is useful information, not a reason to invent a result.
Skills and a practical portfolio exercise
The role combines business understanding, measurement knowledge, careful analysis and communication. A consultant should explain user, session and event measures, check the effect of identifiers and consent, and distinguish an observed association from evidence of causation. Their recommendations should also be realistic for the team implementing them.
For a portfolio, use permissioned or demo data and label any hypothetical figures. The following is a fictional measurement plan for a consultation website, not a reported client result.
Field | Example definition |
|---|---|
Decision | Should we improve the route from an organic landing page to the consultation form? |
Entry measure | Organic Search landing sessions on the production host, for a fixed language and period |
Intermediate action | A form-start event when the visitor first interacts with the form |
Success | An accepted submission, checked separately from a button click |
Validation | Check reload duplicates, consent, authentication and cross-domain transitions |
Limit | Until reconciled with business records, accepted-event counts are not verified people or customers |
Next hypothesis | If entries exist but few forms start, inspect the promise and the route to the form |
Include the dates, filters and definitions used, then write a short memo explaining what the evidence supports. This shows more than an unexplained screenshot or a claim of expertise.
Certification options: Google Analytics and Japan’s WACA qualification
Certifications can structure learning, but they cover different things. Choose them according to the work you want to do, and assess practical evidence alongside the credential.
Option | Main focus | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
Google Analytics Certification | Knowledge and use of Google Analytics | Product learning does not prove every implementation is correct |
Japan’s WACA qualification | A structured programme covering analytics and marketing | A specific Japanese credential, not the universal definition of a consultant |
A practical portfolio | Demonstrated measurement, analysis and decision work | Describe your actual role and the data’s limitations |
Google lists its current courses and certification in the Analytics Academy course guide. WACA describes three levels in its Japanese programme: ウェブ解析士, 上級ウェブ解析士 and ウェブ解析士マスター, progressing from foundational knowledge to practice and instruction. See the official Japanese WACA programme page for its scope and conditions.
WACA exam facts for readers considering the Japanese programme
The following facts concern the Japanese entry-level qualification, checked on 11 October 2026. They should not be applied to an unrelated international course. The official page lists an online, multiple-choice assessment with 60 questions in 60 minutes. Candidates use a computer and take it within the period of the exam they booked. The preparatory course is optional.
Japanese programme cost | Tax-inclusive amount |
|---|---|
Official textbook | JPY 4,400 |
Exam, including certification | JPY 17,600 |
Total without optional course | JPY 22,000 |
Optional course | JPY 11,000 |
Total with optional course | JPY 33,000 |
Maintenance costs are separate. The programme updates by year, and continuing membership and certification involve conditions such as annual fees and follow-up testing, with exceptions for new recipients. Check the current official conditions before booking rather than relying on an old description of exam timing or assignments.
How to evaluate a consultant or your own readiness
Ask for a relevant example and have the consultant explain the business question, data quality checks, comparison conditions and resulting recommendation. A strong answer identifies uncertainty and what would change the decision. A credential alone cannot guarantee revenue, employment or a successful project.
- Can they define a user, session and event without treating them as interchangeable?
- Can they separate a click from an accepted submission and a verified customer?
- Can another analyst reproduce the result from their documented conditions?
- Do they explain what is unmeasured and propose a proportionate next step?
If you are learning, build one complete example that answers these questions. If you are hiring, use them to agree the deliverables and boundaries before the engagement starts.
