Google Ads sitelink assets and organic Google sitelinks are different. Ads assets provide additional destinations associated with an advertisement. Organic sitelinks are selected by Google’s search systems. This guide covers advertising setup and evaluation; it does not show how to specify organic sitelinks through Google Ads.

Google Ads sitelink assets can direct users to relevant pricing, features, or contact pages separately from the main ad destination. If you know the older term “sitelink extensions,” look for assets in current guidance. A clickable sitelink also serves a different purpose from nonclickable callout text.

Google Search Central’s sitelink documentation explains that organic sitelinks are automatically selected when useful. Adding advertising assets is not a method of guaranteeing organic sitelinks or higher search rankings.

Check text limits and search-ad eligibility requirements

The official conditions checked on October 12, 2026 set a 25-character link-text limit, or 12 for double-width languages. Check mixed-language text in the input counter. The Google Ads API SitelinkAsset reference provides two description fields with a maximum of 35 each; if one is supplied, the other is required. Do not interpret that as permission to enter 35 Japanese characters regardless of counting rules.

Review Google’s sitelink asset requirements for duplicate link text, symbols, and destination conditions. A pricing label should lead to pricing information rather than an unexpected or unrelated task.

Add assets and check the intended association level

Current official instructions use the Campaigns to Assets route. In your actual account, confirm the campaign and format before choosing an association level. Do not rely entirely on older “Ads and assets” menu descriptions.

  • Check the relationship between the ad, user task, and destination.
  • Confirm the account or campaign scope of the association.
  • Review link text, descriptions, and final URLs.
  • Check any relevant dates or scheduling conditions.
  • After saving, inspect associations, review state, and destination behavior.

For Performance Max, also check the format’s asset-group context. Do not apply a Search-only hierarchy explanation to every campaign type without checking the actual unit being edited.

Understand hierarchy, dynamic assets, and display conditions

Assets associated at higher and lower levels are not always a simple replacement chain. Dynamic sitelinks may also be eligible. Review the full set of possible candidates rather than assuming that a campaign-level link necessarily removes all account-level links.

Display depends on format, device, and advertising conditions. Adding links does not guarantee a higher CTR or Ad Rank. Prepare six or more candidates where relevant distinct pages exist, but do not manufacture unrelated destinations just to meet a preparation recommendation. A general account-level link should also make sense for the more specific ads that could use it.

Troubleshoot approved assets that are not showing

Approval does not guarantee display. A single preview is not evidence of every search, placement, or device. Troubleshoot association and validity before interpreting limited delivery as a creative failure.

Measurement

Impressions, click type, cost, defined outcomes

Separate sparse data from unmeasured outcomes

Zero clicks with very few impressions is weak evidence for replacing a link. An inaccurate or expired destination, however, should be corrected for accuracy without waiting for more performance data.

Review click types, cost, and outcomes separately

For Search and P-Max, adding sitelinks itself is free and the relevant click-charging conditions apply. Check other formats separately rather than generalizing CPC to all of them. Free asset creation does not mean free advertising, production, or management.

These are teaching assumptions. Do not add overlapping click breakdowns to the ad total. Align the period, audience, device, and aggregation definition when reviewing whether the additional destinations help users complete their intended tasks.
