メディアミックスとは?クロスメディアとの違い

A media mix is the combination of channels used to reach and serve an intended audience. It can include search, social, video, email, print, events, and physical locations.

The aim is not to use as many channels as possible. Give each channel a role based on the customer's situation, the information needed, and the team's ability to operate it well.

Start with the customer's task

Customer situation

Information needed

Possible channels or touchpoints

Has not recognized the problem

A relevant example or trigger

Video, social, outdoor media

Investigates solutions

Methods and trade-offs

Search, articles, webinars

Compares providers

Price, eligibility, evidence, support

Website, demo, sales conversation

Uses the product

Guidance and updates

Email, app, support

These are possible roles, not fixed rules. A social interaction can lead directly to a purchase, while another buyer starts with a referral. Confirm which paths matter for your audience.

What can aggregate data tell us about contributions and allocation?

Using social advertising and an event is a media mix. Guiding event visitors to a relevant follow-up resource is a cross-media design. Scheduling the activity and assigning budgets is media planning.

A hypothetical B2B mix

Consider a fictional service with a monthly media budget of $3,000, excluding production and management. The allocation below illustrates different roles; it is not a recommended benchmark.

Search ads

$1,500

A predefined hypothesis and outcome

Support the paid activity with useful explanation, pricing, and follow-up materials. Owned channels still consume staff time even when there is no media charge.

Few immediate video conversions do not prove the activity has no value. Conversely, calling an activity “awareness” does not exempt it from evaluation. Use measures suited to its role and investigate its relationship with downstream business outcomes.

Build the mix in five steps

  1. Define the business outcome and the period for the decision.
  2. Describe how the intended customer discovers, compares, and buys.
  3. Identify gaps in the current reach, explanation, or buying experience.
  4. Select channels that address those gaps within the available capacity.
  5. Set evaluation dates and rules for continuing, changing, or stopping a test.

A customer journey map can organize the evidence and assumptions behind channel choices. Avoid selecting a channel simply because competitors use it.

Measure the combination carefully

Do not add platform reach totals and label the sum unique people. Audiences overlap, and definitions differ. Similarly, different platforms can credit the same purchase.

Judge acquisition activity with suitable cost and outcome measures, while tracking the intermediate roles of discovery and education. Keep total business revenue and qualified outcomes visible so a platform-specific efficiency improvement does not hide an overall decline.

When changing the mix, record other changes to prices, landing pages, and offers. Altering everything at once makes interpretation harder. With sufficient suitable history, MMM can contribute evidence for longer-term allocation.

Can a small team use a media mix?

Yes, but dividing a small budget across many channels can make each test inconclusive and increase operational work. Start with a proven customer touchpoint and a complementary one that addresses a specific gap. Expand when the evidence and capacity justify it.
