Impressions vs. Reach vs. Page Views: A Practical Guide

An impression generally records a display of content or advertising under a platform's counting rules. Reach describes the distinct audience reached within a defined scope, sometimes as an estimate. Page views count page-view events on a website or app environment.

These metrics answer different questions. Ten thousand impressions do not necessarily mean 10,000 people saw the content, and 1,000 ad clicks do not necessarily produce 1,000 measured page visits.

Compare the units before comparing the numbers

Metric

What it describes

Common misunderstanding

Impressions

Counted displays

Treating displays as unique people

Reach

Distinct reached audience within the report's rules

Adding platforms as if audiences never overlap

Page views

Recorded page-view events

Treating repeat views as new visitors

Clicks

Recorded interactions of a defined kind

Assuming every click is an external visit

Video views

Plays satisfying the platform's definition

Comparing different view thresholds directly

One person can generate several impressions and page views. A platform's reach may be estimated or account-based. Adding Instagram reach to YouTube reach does not deduplicate people who use both services.

Use frequency within a consistent scope

Average frequency = impressions ÷ reach

In a hypothetical campaign with 30,000 impressions and 10,000 reached accounts, average frequency is 3. This does not mean every account received exactly three impressions. The distribution can be uneven.

Calculate the ratio only when impressions and reach cover the same period, campaign scope, and measurement definition. An impression total from several channels divided by one channel's reach has no useful interpretation.

Check platform-specific definitions

YouTube thumbnail impressions are not all video exposure

YouTube counts registered thumbnail impressions under defined conditions. Some views, including traffic from external sites, do not originate from counted thumbnail impressions. Total video views divided by thumbnail impressions therefore does not reproduce the official impression click-through rate. YouTube impressions FAQ

TikTok distinguishes interaction types

TikTok Ads distinguishes all clicks from destination clicks. Video metrics also use different play and engagement conditions. Select the metric that matches your question rather than comparing every “click” or “view” as if it had the same definition. TikTok basic metrics

A served impression is not automatically a viewable one

Viewability uses additional conditions. Google's standard explanation includes at least 50% of a display ad visible for one second, or a video ad for two seconds. These standards describe an opportunity to see an ad, not proof that a person noticed or understood it. Google viewability guidance

Observation

What to investigate

Impressions rise but clicks do not

Audience, placements, message relevance, campaign role

Clicks rise but measured visits do not

Loading, redirects, tracking, click definition

Visits rise but inquiries do not

Offer fit, information gaps, form behavior

Frequency rises while response falls

Audience saturation and creative performance

None of these patterns identifies a cause by itself. A campaign designed for awareness should not be judged solely on immediate purchase clicks, but it still needs an appropriate measurement plan.

Aggregate rates correctly

For a click-through rate, add the relevant clicks and impressions before dividing. Do not take a simple average of campaign percentages when their volumes differ.

Do not add daily reach and label the sum monthly unique reach. The same people can appear on several days. If deduplicated reach is unavailable, label the total as a sum of reported reach values rather than a unique audience.

Build a small metric dictionary

For each reported field, record its platform, definition, counting unit, date range, inclusion rules, and whether it is estimated. Note changes when a platform updates its methodology.

For operating reports, combine this dictionary with the social media analytics workflow. To connect visits with outcomes, use the conversion rate guide. Clear units make these reports more useful than a larger set of unexplained totals.
