Click-through rate (CTR) measures clicks as a share of impressions: clicks ÷ impressions × 100. A result with 300 clicks from 10,000 impressions has a 3% CTR. The calculation is simple, but its interpretation depends on the placement, audience and definition of a click.

Use CTR to investigate relevance and interest. Then check what those visits accomplish. A more clickable message can attract less suitable customers.

Aggregate clicks and impressions, not percentages

The simple average of 10% and 1% is 5.5%, but that is not the combined CTR. Divide 190 total clicks by 10,000 total impressions. Apply the same approach when combining days, campaigns or pages. If impressions are zero, the rate is undefined.

What is a good CTR?

WordStream’s 2026 report gives an overall search-ad CTR of 6.64%. Its sample covers 13,474 US search campaigns between April 2025 and March 2026, across Google and Microsoft advertising. The reported averages are medians.

Separate brand demand from generic queries and control for mix changes

Do not carry a US benchmark into Japan without qualification. Likewise, a universal organic “position one CTR” misses differences in ads, maps, videos and AI answers appearing around the result. Prefer a comparable internal baseline over an external number with unclear methodology.

Improve advertising relevance

For search ads, match the actual query to the offer. Be clear about the product, intended customer, price conditions and benefit. The landing page should make the same information easy to find. Review irrelevant queries when deciding how to refine targeting.

For display and social campaigns, separate placements, audiences, creatives and exposure levels. Check whether the selected metric uses all clicks or link clicks. Decide which interaction represents useful traffic before comparing ads.

Google’s visible 1–10 Quality Score is diagnostic, not an input to the auction itself. Use its expected-CTR, relevance and landing-page components to investigate problems. A better displayed score or CTR does not guarantee a lower CPC.

Improve organic-search CTR

Filter Search Console to the page, then inspect queries, devices and countries. Prioritize queries with enough impressions and a reasonably stable ranking context. Make the title state the reader’s question and the page’s actual answer. Align the description and opening paragraph with the useful calculation, comparison or process inside.

Keep a dated change log and evaluate ranking and query-mix changes alongside CTR. Google can generate a different title or snippet. FAQ rich results ended in May 2026, so adding FAQ markup should not be promoted as a current CTR tactic. Useful on-page answers can still help readers.

Check whether more clicks create better outcomes

This hypothetical example holds impressions at 10,000 and CPC at JPY 100. Real campaigns can also change CPC, so use actual costs when evaluating them.

Version B attracts more clicks but produces fewer outcomes at a higher cost. Review conversion rate, CPA, revenue and qualified-lead share before declaring a winner. With small samples, predefine an observation period rather than reacting to a single day’s movement.
