A/B Testing Tools Compared: Free Access, GA4 Integration, and Setup

Choose an A/B testing platform by the experiment you need to run, not just its visual editor. You must establish who receives each version, what counts as exposure and success, and how the result will be evaluated. Heatmaps and recordings can reveal problems, but they do not by themselves deliver a randomized experiment. A useful comparison therefore includes contracts, implementation, and measurement.
Separate experiment delivery from behavior analysis
Experiment delivery assigns eligible visitors to versions, renders the experience, and connects exposure with outcomes. Behavior analysis helps explain where people click, hesitate, or leave. These roles can complement one another without being interchangeable.
Microsoft’s Clarity documentation describes heatmaps and session recordings. Place Clarity in a supporting analysis category rather than counting it as a standalone randomization and experiment-delivery engine. A persuasive recording is a hypothesis source, not proof that a treatment improved conversion.
What changed after Google Optimize ended
Google’s sunset notice confirms that Optimize and Optimize 360 ended on September 30, 2023. Its discussion of VWO, Optimizely, and AB Tasty does not establish an exclusive list of official replacements. Public integration APIs and the features a vendor currently implements are separate matters.
A migration should review targeting, assignment units, outcome events, consent behavior, and data retention. Copying an experiment name does not preserve its measurement definition. Do not compare old and new reports as one continuous experiment unless the underlying populations and methods support that interpretation.
Compare a verified shortlist by product role
This shortlist uses official material checked on October 12, 2026. It is a role-based comparison, not a performance ranking or a claim that every feature belongs to every contract.
Candidate | Role | Commercial checks | Implementation checks |
|---|---|---|---|
Wingify product offering | Current public presentation of the former VWO / AB Tasty offering | Product-specific MAU or MTU definitions; trial versus contract | Selected product, experiment types, exposure integration |
Optimizely Web Experimentation | Experiments on website experiences | Quoted scope, billing unit, evaluation terms | Targeting, allocation, goals, QA, analytics connection |
Optimize Next | A candidate for web experiments | Current free and paid limits | Applicable Analytics integration and event validation |
Clarity | Supporting recordings and heatmaps | Behavior-analysis terms | Use a separate validated assignment and delivery mechanism |
The current Wingify pricing page presents AB Tasty and VWO under a combined brand. That does not prove every existing contract or feature has been migrated identically.
Check free access, trials, and billing units
A permanent free tier, a time-limited trial, and a sales-led evaluation are different offers. Compare monthly versus annual commitments, tax, overages, minimum terms, exports, and termination. MAU, MTU, and pageviews should not be treated as equivalent billing populations.
Optimize Next’s plan-renewal notice documents changes from June 1, 2026. Verify the current limits rather than repeating an older monthly price. Request the specific product, billable-user definition, post-trial terms, and integration restrictions in the quote. An unverified price is not evidence of a cheaper solution.
Validate GA4 integration and outcome events
An Analytics connection needs an acceptance test. Check that experiment ID, version, exposure, and success belong to the intended population. Define whether success means a click, a completed submission, or a validated business outcome. Those measures answer different questions.
Document repeat submissions, development traffic, excluded pages, and consent handling. An event count is not automatically a count of registrations or independent experiment participants. Investigate differences between the delivery platform’s population and the analytics report instead of silently choosing the more attractive result.
Test assignment, consent, rendering, and exposure tracking
Use implementation references such as Optimizely’s Web Experimentation documentation to separate allocation, targeting, goals, and QA. Visual editing does not remove the need to validate single-page application transitions, consent, or form completion.
- Confirm intended assignment on initial visits and returns.
- Check excluded URLs, login states, and mobile layouts.
- Test consent-dependent collection without bypassing user choices.
- Inspect flicker, loading delays, and layout changes.
- Distinguish form failure from success and detect duplicate success events.
Record the owner, test environment, acceptance result, and rollback procedure. A short installation snippet does not establish that the entire experiment is reliable.
Work through a hypothetical experiment brief
Consider a hypothetical CTA experiment. Allocate anonymous users equally between A and B. Define the primary rate as users with a valid submission divided by exposed users in that group, with duplicate, bot, and eligibility rules specified before launch.
Version | Exposed users | Valid-submit users | Rate |
|---|---|---|---|
A | 5000 | 100 | 100 / 5,000 = 2.0% |
B | 5000 | 120 | 120 / 5,000 = 2.4% |
The observed absolute difference is 0.4 percentage points. Relative lift is (2.4% − 2.0%) / 2.0% = 20%. These hypothetical observations alone do not establish significance or a winner. Prespecify the sample and duration plan, stopping rule, and treatment of multiple outcomes. Do not stop simply because a daily result looks favorable.
Prepare a procurement and implementation checklist
A procurement checklist should cover the billing unit, supported experiment, implementation owner, QA, retention, export, and handover. Ask who verifies correctness as well as what the interface can do. This exposes work that is absent from the software subscription price.
Start with one important page and one clearly defined outcome. Connect hypothesis development, allocation, delivery, collection, and evaluation before expanding the program. Keep attribution-model credit separate from an experimental comparison, and retain the change record so that later content or traffic changes are visible.
